Movie Review: Goodnight Mommy (2014)

goodnightmommy2.png

When twins Lukas (Lukas Schwarz) and Elias’ (Elias Schwarz) mother (Susanne Wuest) returns home from the hospital, with bandages completely covering her face, the boys are left wondering if something about her has changed… or if indeed that’s even her at all. Goodnight Mommy (“Ich Sen Ich Sen”) is an Austrian horror film released in 2014.

+ the twins Elias and Lukas (played by Elias and Lukas Schwarz, which I guess saved on them having to learn new names?) are creepy, and impulsive. It is interesting to watching horror movies about children now that I’m an adult, because I can see myself acting the same way
+ the mother (Susanne Wuest) is creepy, in a more traditional horror movie monster kind of way (which is by no means saying she necessarily is one, OR IS SHE)
+ the plot is consistently tense and ominous, and the final third of the film in particular will have you watching through your fingers
+ there is some very short but poignant injuries inflicted on some characters, though I would not call it ‘gore’ as such. Jut perhaps things you don’t want to happen to you…

– the twist becomes quite obvious realtively early but is not “revealed” until the very end. Maybe that is because of having to read subtitles, which meant I payed much more attention to what was being said

> one scene in the middle of the film (in the forest) doesn’t make much sense to me. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know the one, so please explain it to me

Should you see this film: There is something about foreign (to me) horror movies that makes them extra tense. Whether it was paying extra attention, and not being able to look away at fear of missing something in the subtitles, this film pushed all of my horror buttons; it is tense, realistic(ish), unnerving and not overly long. Give this a watch if you don’t mind subtitles.
