Wrestling Review: NXT TakeOver: Dallas (2016)

History runs deep in the Lone Star state. Emanating live from the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas NXT is taking over. After only just surviving the Samoan Submission Machine in London, Finn Balor must once again defend his NXT Heavyweight Championship against Samoa Joe, and after the huge brawl closing off NXT this week, this one is set to explode. After powering through the other NXT Divas, Bayley now comes face to face with the unhinged Asuka, whom general manager William Regal has called the biggest signing in NXT history. The team of Jason Jordan and Chad Gable, American Alpha, have had a meteoric rise through the tag division, but they now come up against The Revival, a team of hard hitters who use a very simple game plan: no flips, just fists. We are just three days out from Wrestlemania, but for one night only, NXT will take over Dallas.

+ Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura: holy crap, just read that match-up again. And then imagine the best match you can. This was better than that. The crowd was on fire for both, and both put on an absolute masterpiece. I predict you’ll hear a lot about this match in the years to come
+ Bayley (c) vs Asuka (NXT Women’s Championship): The NXT women have been putting on match of the night contenders every time they are given the chance, and this was no exception. Asuka’s hard hitting style was a spectacle of itself, but the crowd’s love for Bayley made sure it was never quite clear where the match was going. Fantastic match
+ The Revival (Dash & Dawson) (c) vs American Alpha (Jason Jordan & Chad Gable) (NXT Tag Team Championships): holy smokes, Chad Gable is the most popular dude in years. This was the best match to start the show, and aside from a single sloppy double-team move, this was a fantastic match. American Alpha are so smooth, and The Revival make every shot look like it could take your head off (probably because they could)
+ Baron Corbin vs Austin Aries: Corbin has improved so much in the past few months that it is a genuine joy to hate him. Austin Aries being in the WWe is a huge moment in itself, and this match only added to Aries’ extensive resum√©. Not a show stealer, by any means, but a perfect display of what both these guys can do

– Finn Balor (c) vs Samoa Joe (NXT Heavyweight Championship): after a hugely violent opening few minutes, this match was never really able to get under way due to various stoppages. I am sure these two could do fantastic things if given uninterupted match time, but unfortunately this time that was not the case

> Apollo Crews vs Elias Sampson didn’t happen. I guess it was bumped for more of the others, since they knew this was the odd one out?
> there were a lot of famous wrestling faces at ring side, including Kota Ibushi and Scott Hall. It really makes NXT seem huge, when these stars want to watch it

Should you watch this event: Definitely. Every match, even the main event, has enough to warrant at least one viewing. Every single one of these performers showed just why NXT is the place to be.
