Wrestling Review: WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs (2016)

It is the one night a year when the WWE becomes a human demolition derby when the WWE storms into the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas for it’s event Tables, Ladders & Chairs. It will be AJ Styles versus Dean Ambrose in the titular main event match, a TLC match for the WWE Heavyweight Championship, a match the luniatic Ambrose may have more experience in. But up against Styles – the Champ that runs the Camp, the face that runs the place – Ambrose will not be able to take anything for granted. The show will also feature three other champiionship matches: Becky Lynch defends her Womens title against the vicious Alexa Bliss in a tables match; The Miz will look to retain his Intercontinental belt against Dolph Ziggler in a ladder match; and the tag team champions, Heath Slater and Rhyno, will need to find a way to defeat the Wyatt Family. Two other grude matches are on the cards, with Kalisto facing Baron Corbin in a match where using chairs is legal, and Nikki Bella meeting Carmella in a match which will have no disqualifications. It is going to be a wild night…

+ AJ Styles (c) vs Dean Ambrose (TLC Match) (WWE World Heavyweight Championship): much like Miz/Ziggler, this seemed to be a much slower paced ladder match than most others in WWE. Here, however, it was at least somewhat effective. As amazing as the high spots were, they did seem few and far between for what was meant to be a big match between two main event players, though some twists and turns keep things interesting. This was not the best match these two have had, and might not even be the last, but it was still a very good match
+ Nikki Bella vs Carmella (No Disqualifications Match): as far as long-term stories go, this has been one of the best the WWE has had in a long time. And holy cow, this match was brutal. These two women beat the absolute snot out of each other, which made for what is hopefully the end of their rivalry
+ Baron Corbin vs Kalisto (Chairs Match): perhaps unexpectedly, this was a really solid match. Kalisto seemed to work a bit slower than usual, which made his fast moments that much more effective, and Corbin continues to be one hell of a character to really, really love to hate
+ Heath Slater & Rhyno (c) vs The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt & Randy Orton) (Tag Team Championship): this was a very short match, and I do wish the match had gone on longer. However, there were such great advances in the story of the Wyatt Family members that its length is almost forgiven

The Miz (c) (w/ Maryse) vs Dolph Ziggler (Ladder Match) (Intercontinental Championship): something about this match just never clicked for me. Maybe it is the over exposure these two have had lately, or perhaps just the this was a slower paced ladder match, who knows. Either way, this was a slog to get through, and hopefully this is the end of their feud
Becky Lynch (c) vs Alexa Bliss (Tables Match) (WWE SmackDown Womens Championship): unfortunately, this was another match not worth it’s time. The crowd lost interest early, as did I, and by the time the finish came it was more of a mercy killing for this match. As a side note, hot damn Alexa’s make up was horrible
American Alpha, The Hype Bros & Apollo Crews vs. The Vaudevillains, The Ascension & Curt Hawkins: this was the obligatory pre-show tag match, and it went about as any other pre-show match in history. American Alpha are so, so good that it is just a shame they are being relegated to the pre-show. I have no doubts they will be huge, when their time comes, but until then it is hard to sit through their misuse

> AJ Styles had a slight wardrobe malfunction, with a tear in his tights. Nice butt, though

Should you watch this event: This was probably the worst of the SmackDownLive exclusive events. Strangely, it was the main event matches which did not deliver, though the undercard managed to show some depth. Perhaps this is a sign for the need to a shakeup; try out some new blood in the title matches. Overall, this is probably worth a miss, or only worth watching if you are a huge fan of someone involved.
