Movie Review: Don’t Breathe (2016)

Directed by Fede Álvarez (who also directed the 2013 Evil Dead remake), Don’t Breathe is a 2016 horror movie. Jane Levy (also from the Evil Dead remake), Daniel Zovatto (It Follows) and Dylan Minette are Rocky, Money and Alex, a trio of all around jerks who are looking to make some quick money by breaking into the home of a blind man (Stephen Lang, Avatar), a wealthy US army veteran. Unfortunately, the delinquents are not prepared for what they find inside.

+ Stephen Lang as The Blind Man is insanely terrifying. Despite his relatively unassuming stature, Lang had such a tremendous presence and was a large part of the overall tension of the film
+ the trio of douche-bag thieves are all fine, with Levy being the standout. Levy may be getting into a Maika Monroe style niche as a young scream queen, and from this film, as well as the Evil Dead remake, this seems to suits her well
+ the plot starts off somewhat bland, but soon adds a few little twists and turns which separate it from the standard run-of-the-mill home invasion horror film. It would be a spoiler to add any specific warnings, but some developments are a little bit out of left field

– I’m really not sure if I was meant to feel sorry for the protagonists or not, because they were all such massive assholes. Not just that they were breaking into a blind guy’s house, but they were all such bad people that it was difficult to care when (or perhaps if? Spoilers? I dunno) anything happened to them
– since the gimmick of the movie is the blind antagonist, much of the tension relies on the protagonists being quiet. Unfortunately, this means there are lots of quiet scenes with one over-the-top loud moment which are often just annoying more than tense

> I love doggos, but I feel like some doggos would not love me

Should you see this film: Overall, I enjoyed this movie. Álvarez is two-for-two in mind, following 2013’s Evil Dead, in terms of making horror movies which can effect you in different ways. This was a very above average horror movie. You should see this film.
